STONE TOTEM
PROJECT PLAN
ASSONOMETRIC VIEW
In 2015, after a brief collaboration, the company Idea Marmi Srl-Cinisi entrusted us with the task of designing a traveling display. The project takes into account certain client requests: ease of execution in the assembly, disassembly and transport phases, limited budget, strong iconicity. The archetype of chess has inspired us to use an orthogonal and modular geometric mesh, a compositional matrix of the entire walkable surface on which eight stone totems stand out on a human scale. The totems generate a harmonious relationship between full and empty, stone surfaces and interstitial depths. The relationship between the different colors of the segments, which make up the totems creates a polychrome composition, whose uniformity is ensured by the darker and more veined stones placed at the base of each individual totem, and the lighter and more homogeneous in the terminal part. The staging is characterized by a formal dynamism: upward through the chromatisms of the totems and downward descending, due to the presence of the metal base, whose closed and open interlocking design seems to expand and merge towards the surrounding space. The final result is an installation made completely dry and usable endlessly, even in open spaces. The skeleton of the entire set-up consists of eight elements made of galvanized steel boxes, which can be bolted on site, on which eight modular platforms are placed, which make up the walkable platform. The latter are made of press-formed sheet metal, not welded and glued onto a birch marine plywood support. Each totem is made of different hollow segments connected to the load-bearing metal frame by means of specially designed spacers. At the center of the exhibition there is a cardinal element on whose faces the name of the company is engraved, whose character has been expressly designed.
